Purple Martin Box at Mill Lake Park in Orange City (2021)

To celebrate its 60th anniversary, West Volusia Audubon Member Suze Peace donated a Purple Martin box to Orange City’s Mill Lake Park.

Purple martins are cavity nesters that often struggle to find trees that are suitable and, as such, man-made nesting structures have become more popular. With 18 apartments, the house helps to make up for the lack of trees near the lake with hollowed out holes for natural nests. The house is designed to be attractive to purple martins specifically, including the size of the holes and the “porches” for them to fly to and from.

This photo, shared by the City of Orange City, shows the Purple Martins have found the home quite suitable!
